Land Rover Defender Wins World Car Design of the Year

Brought to you by Land Rover North Dade

The Land Rover Defender has been awarded the coveted World Car Design of the Year award by the 93 global World Car Awards judges. The Defender provides top-notch on and off-road capability without sacrificing the luxury that Land Rover customers have depended on. The judges praised the Defender's distinctive rugged design, practicality, on-road dynamics, and off-road capability. This is the 53rd international award that the Defender has brought home and the third time that a Land Rover model has won the World Car Design of the Year award. Keep reading below to learn what earned the Defender this award!

Land Rover Defender Exterior Design

The Defender's exterior design gives off a confident look with a modern front end, round LED headlights, sharp lines, and 8.9 inches of ground clearance. The Defender has an instantly recognizable silhouette with a sharp A-line from front to back. The Defender 90 is the two-door option, while the 110 comes off the line with four doors. The black side vents on the front fenders give the Defender a sporty look, as do the black fender flares and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Defender's aggressive looks and off-road prowess can be attributed to the minimal amount of overhangs in the front and rear. This makes for optimal approach and departure angles.

Land Rover Defender Interior Design

In the Defender's history, it is known to have a stripped-back personality with a focus on practicality. Instead of conforming to the modern-day car interiors with structural elements hidden from sight, the new model emphasizes its personality by exposing structural features that are normally hidden and drawing the occupant's attention to the vehicle's simplicity and practicality. The two-door Defender 90 offers seating for up to six. Meanwhile, the 110 comfortably seats up to seven. The Defender also brings modern technology to the forefront with a 10-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. All the controls from the touchscreen to the shift knob are carefully placed to be sensibly within reach of the driver. The interior of the Defender provides everything you need while maintaining a neat and tidy appearance.

Land Rover Defender Capability

The Defender's capability starts under the hood with a standard 2.0L turbocharged Inline-4 that is rated for 296 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission. Most of the Defender's capability comes from the expertly-crafted full-time all-wheel drivetrain. As was previously mentioned, the Defender 90 comes standard with 8.9 inches of ground clearance when equipped with coil springs. The available air suspension allows the Defender to go as low as 8.5 inches or as high as a towering 11.5 inches.
